Puppies, Kittens, and the Building Blocks of Good Health

Pet Wellness Care From Oshtemo Veterinary Hospital

To prepare a new puppy or kitten for a long and healthful life, it is best to start with the first visit and physical exam once he or she has reached 6–8 weeks of age. The first trip to the vet will be an ideal opportunity to look for any health issues or congenital problems that may affect your new family member later in life. After running checks for internal and external parasites, fleas, and worms, we can start to discuss and design your puppy or kitten’s first round of system-strengthening vaccinations.

Puppy and Kitten Vaccinations

Each new pet’s vaccination package is sure to be different, and at Oshtemo Veterinary Hospital we always work with you to decide on the immunizations that will be most appropriate for the lifestyle of your new family member.

Essential vaccinations for puppies may include:

The full puppy health and vaccination schedule is available here.

Kittens may receive all necessary vaccinations:

  • Feline upper respiratory viruses
  • Distemper (panleukopenia)
  • Rabies
  • Testing to evaluate leukemia status and determine if a vaccination against feline leukemia will be appropriate.

The full kitten health and vaccination schedule is available here.

Following initial vaccination appointments, puppies and kittens will be scheduled subsequent visits for any necessary boosters to ensure they remain protected.

Adult Pet Wellness

During adulthood and throughout your pet’s lifetime, annual physical exams and health evaluations can provide necessary information to keep your family member well. Your pet’s yearly visit to Oshtemo Veterinary Hospital will also consist of parasite checks and necessary vaccination updates to booster their effectiveness.

Senior Cat and Dog Wellness

Once your pet reaches 7 years of age, our veterinarians will complement their annual physical exams and vaccination updates with yearly senior pet blood work. This is a great way to keep tabs on internal system function and plan for any potential health issues that may arise further down the road.

For your convienience you can download our senior pet testing form and fill it out before your next senior pet appointment.

Wellness Care for Pocket Pets and Smaller Mammals

For rabbits, ferrets, and pocket pets, annual physical exams and wellness checks are a good way to promote proper husbandry and meet the unique needs of these members of your family. Our veterinarians can discuss aspects of home care, such as housing and nutrition, to ensure the good health of your pocket pet or other small mammal.

We have been blessed for almost 15 years since we found Oshtemo Veterinary Hospital. We feel as though the doctors and entire staff are like family. They have worked (especially Dr. Heckaman) faithfully to successfully care for our little 13 year old mini-dachshund Rosie who has health issues. We would never consider taking Rosie to another clinic. We have such respect and gratitude for all of the staff! ~ Dawn and Bryan Morrisonquote
